Adrienne Mandel --- (301) 858-3045

Gave a summary of what the legislators do during the year, what committees they are currently working on and what expectations legislators have for upcoming year.  1st order of business for the legislation is addressing bills that have been vetoed by the governor and attempt to override the veto; specifically, to address a minimum wage bill that was vetoed by the governor.  The current minimum wage in the State of Maryland is $5.15 per hour.  The minimum wage bill was asking for a $1 per hour increase.  The other vetoed bill the legislation wants to overturn is known as the “Walmart” bill regarding health care.  This bill would require large companies to pay their “fair share” of their employees’ health care costs in order to offset taxpayer burden.

Issues they will be looking at are assisted living, long-term health care, stiffer penalties for drunk drivers, gang violence and affordable housing.

Senator Teitlebaum ---

Serves on senate finance committee.  Discussed legislation regarding technology issues including such as spyware and notification upon corporate database compromise.  Discussed “federally qualified health centers”.

Carol Petzhold ---

Discussed renewable energy legislation.  The current bill she is working on would require a certain portion of energy sold to be for renewable energy sources.  One of the most prominent forms of renewable energy sources being investigated is wind turbine.  Two other bills she’s working on have to do with identity theft.  The first would prohibit employers from putting Social Security number on pay stubs or paychecks.  The second bill would empower Park Police to investigate crimes of identity theft outside of park property.

Delegate Hank Heller ---

Ways and means committee.  Discussed reasons for deficit/surpluses in state budget.  3 basic sources of income are income tax, sales tax and Keno/lottery sales.  Maryland has one of the lowest sales taxes in the country.
