KMCA Executive Committee Meeting

Attending: Adrian Black, Henry Davis, David Janus, Marilyn Lawlor, Jay Marcus, Jim Priestley, Cynthia Brandt Campagna, Rebekah Rasooly

 

  1. Studio project – Alex Chen, a faculty member at UMCP, is asking community associations to participate in a graduate student project on the ‘greening’ of Wheaton.  The students will be surveying community members about their attitudes on green businesses.  The group agreed to participate, but to discourage any kind of door-to-door surveys, and to request a draft of the section on Kemp Mill before the final report is submitted to the Wheaton Redevelopment Advisory Committee.

 

  1. Treasurer’s report - $2,560.12 is in the account.  In addition, there are two CDs that will mature in Feburary 2010 for $1300 and $1200.  There are currently 192 members.  29 are due for renewal in the next two months.  KMCA has 1600 households in its area.

 

  1. Committees - The Transportation, Public Safety and Parks committees will continue and reports will be requested for future meetings.

 

  1. Upcoming community meeting – the date is October 14 and Nancy Navarro will be speaking.
    1. Publicizing the meeting
    2. Reserving the space
    3. Questions for Nancy Navarro
      1. Library – status of plans, role of County Council
      2. Community Center – potential for renovation/expansion
      3. Good Counsel redevelopment – status of Rafferty Center
      4. Wheaton redevelopment – overall goals, status
      5. Berman Hebrew Academy – sale of property
      6. Intersection of Randolph Road & Georgia Avenue – plans for renovation and redesign
      7. Mailboxes

Rebekah will send these on to the Council Member.

 

  1. Future meetings
    1. Jim Furstero with the County Dept. of Environmental Protection will be invited for our winter meeting to talk about recycling.
    2. Pepco should also be invited to make a presentation about winterizing homes -

 

  1. Library committee – The group agreed to establish a Library Committee, with Henry as chair.  The following points were discussed:
    1. Goals of committee – Primarily information-gathering on status of County plans for the Wheaton Library and reporting back to the KMCA.
    2. Enlisting community support
    3. Sending a copy of the letter to County Executive Leggett to all Council members –

 

  1. Website – The group commended Alan Felsen’s excellent management of the Web site.  The group will try to write short articles to keep the site fresh and interesting.  The first articles will be on:
    1. The new Library Committee –
    2. Nancy Navarro’s comments at the upcoming meeting

 

  1. Wheaton Redevelopment Advisory Committee (WRAC) – Jonathan Fink, a KMCA member, will be attending and reporting back to the KMCA, but will not speak on behalf of the KMCA.  Jonathan is now a member of the WRAC.  Minutes from WRAC meetings can be found at http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/mcgtmpl.asp?url=/content/rsc/midcnty/bds-comm.asp#wrac.
