Candidates to represent District 19 in the Maryland legislature were invited to speak to the KMCA community. Candidates in attendance included:

State Senate
Mike Lenett (D) (incumbent)
Roger Manno (D) (currently a Delegate)

State House of Delegates
Sam Arora (D)
Bonnie Culleson (D)
Hoan Dang (D)
Jay Hutchins (D)
Ben Kramer (D) (incumbent)
Lynn Rivera (R)
Vivian Scretchen (D)

Each candidate was asked to briefly introduce him or herself. Each was given an opportunity to respond to the following questions from the audience:
1. What have you accomplished that has prepared you to serve in this office?
2. How will you work to resolve the inequity in funds Montgomery County received from the state compared to the taxes paid by its residents?
3. Will you support state agriculture by supporting direct shipping of wine to Maryland residents?
Although their backgrounds varied, all appeared to be capable and eager to serve in office.

The candidates asserted that the funding inequity – Montgomery County receives 14 cents from every tax dollar residents send to the state – is due in part to the perception that Montgomery is a “rich” county. They spoke about the need to advocate for our less- fortunate residents. They acknowledged, however, that given that finances are tight statewide, that at best they would prevent the inequity from worsening.

All of the candidates stated that they supported allowing direct shipment of wine in order to allow residents a broader choice of products and to foster the success of Maryland agriculture.

The candidates then each gave a closing statement.

Due to the length of the candidates’ forum, no new business was brought to the floor.

The meeting was thus brought to a close.

Respectfully submitted,

Cynthia D. Brandt Campagna
Secretary, KMCA 2009-11
