Kemp Mill Designates June 10 - 14 Bike to Metro Week

The Kemp Mill Civic Association is sponsoring bike trips to the Wheaton Metro June 10-14.

Each morning that week, a "tour leader" will lead a group of cyclists from the intersection of Lamberton Road and Arcola Avenue to the Wheaton Metro, which is about three miles from Kemp Mill. Interested cyclists should meet at 8 a.m. on the corner near the Kemp Mill Estates sign.

Tour leaders will be some of the many Kemp Mill residents who already bike to the Metro. Their usual path goes through the Sligo Creek Trail to the bike racks at the Kiss and Ride side of the Metro station. Interested participants are encouraged to wear a helmet and have back and front lights for their bike, particularly for those who might return after dark.

The idea for "Bike to Metro Week" came from the Civic Association's transportation committee, which is charged with finding solutions to transportation issues in the neighborhood. Transportation committee Chairman Natan Zimand says he hopes that cycling will help Kemp Mill residents see traffic patterns from a different perspective while encouraging an activity that is environmentally friendly and fun.

"We hope this activity will help introduce people to neighbors who they might not know, but also share an interest in cycling," Zimand says. "If several people participate we hope to plan additional Bike to Work weeks and perhaps offer staggered times for people on different work schedules.
